Educational Psychology Service

Our Educational Psychology Service (EPS) is here to make a positive difference to the lives of all children and young people in the Scottish Borders.

We do this by applying psychology to:

  • provide general consultation and advice to schools
  • undertake specific work with permission to support individual children and young people
  • training and development work for school staff and others

How we can help

  • support children and young people's development, learning and social experience at school
  • work with others to identify and understand children's needs, particularly where additional support may be required
  • help parents/carers, the school and the education authority to make informed choices about meeting children's or young people’s needs
  • work with school staff, parents/carers and other professionals such as speech and language therapists and social workers, to help children and young people achieve

How we become involved

  • we can only become involved with the permission of parents/carers or young people who have read our privacy statement and provided informed consent
  • schools already have a system for monitoring and reviewing the progress of all children and young people. If teachers feel they have tried all their strategies to support a child or young person, they may seek further advice and support from the Educational Psychologist

How to access the service

Requests for our  involvement usually come through schools, nurseries or other educational establishments. Anyone wishing to access the service should contact the school directly in the first instance.

For further information you can download our leaflets below:

If you still have concerns after this, contact our Educational Psychology team directly.

What happens next?

As appropriate a meeting will be arranged with school and Education Psychology, parent/carer and child or young person. Other appropriate partners may also be involved.

The purpose of this meeting is to:

  • find out how things have been recently
  • find out what is working and what is not
  • develop an action plan so we all know what we will do
