An Amber Weather Warning for ice is in place for much of the Scottish Borders from 1pm Saturday until 6am Sunday.
An Amber Weather Warning for snow has also been issued which runs from 3pm to 2am.
A band of freezing rain, rain, sleet and snow is moving in from the west during the day. The main risk of freezing rain is expected at higher levels – over 200m. This means that most of our larger towns should not be affected, however many rural routes and areas of trunk roads sit at or above this level.
There is also a risk of snow through the afternoon and evening, up to 10cm over 100m, with strong winds potentially leading to drifting snow.
By around midnight the worst of the weather will have cleared the eastern coast, with a clear, cold night to follow.
Police advice
Chief Inspector Andy McLean, Local Area Commander, said: “Winter driving is a question of common sense and all drivers should ask themselves if they really need to travel when conditions are poor.
“No-one should ever place themselves at risk on the road and it may be worth making alternative arrangements. If you are travelling on the roads you should ensure you and your vehicle are adequately prepared for the conditions, making sure you have sufficient fuel and supplies such as warm clothing, food and water in the event you are delayed for several hours. Charge your mobile phone and plan your route as well as alternative routes.”
