Border Women's Aid - Domestic abuse services

Border Women's Aid (BWA)
Description
BWA is a charity providing specialist support to women and their children who are experiencing or at risk of domestic abuse throughout the Scottish Borders.

BWA provides safe accommodation, at an undisclosed address in the Borders, which is a modern, clean, well equipped house. The refuge provides accommodation and support for women and children who have left abusive partners. Each family has their own bedroom, living and kitchen areas. The garden area is shared. While in refuge, BWA also supports women to engage with services as they establish a new life for themselves and their children. This includes helping them to sort out their benefits, apply for housing, attend social work and health appointments, dealing with court appearances etc. But most importantly, BWA works intensively with women to enable them to rebuild their confidence, identify the outcomes that they want to achieve for themselves (and their children) and support them to work towards them.

BWA does not operate a children’s service but can make a referral to Children 1st for support for children and young people affected by domestic abuse.

BWA can offer follow on support for up to one year to families who have moved on from refuge to support the family or woman practically and emotionally until they feel safe and secure.

BWA has an outreach service for women who do not wish to come to refuge but who are living with the impact or risk of domestic abuse. Where women are not ready to leave abusive partners, the outreach service helps women to put safety strategies in place for themselves and their children in their current situation.
