- Request or Question
- Please can I be provided with the Council guidelines for the teaching of reading in Primary 1 and 2. Specifically, do the guidelines specify which literacy programmes are to be used in P1 and P2. Can you confirm if the Council purchased Active Literacy from North Lanarkshire Council and has been used in P1 and P2 Also, can I be provided with a list of teaching programmes used for children identified with poor phonemic awareness/dyslexia
- Response
- SBC’s advocated approach to the teaching of reading (including P1 and P2) is currently under review, with a revised approach in draft form. A copy is attached. In essence, the SBC approach is built on the latest evidence, namely the Simple view of reading, Scarborough’s reading rope and the 5 pillars of reading. As an authority, we are not specifying which literacy programme to use but, instead, a proposed phonics pathway (attached) supported by the approaches set out in the draft policy document. Can you confirm if the Council purchased Active Literacy from North Lanarkshire Council and has been used in P1 and P2 SBC has not purchased Active Literacy as a universal, authority wide resource. However, some schools have purchased this programme independently. Also, can I be provided with a list of teaching programmes used for children identified with poor phonemic awareness/dyslexia There are a number of resources and programmes available to support poor phonemic awareness / dyslexia and schools are free to implement a variety of approaches. As part of our Literacy difficulties including dyslexia policy, we signpost schools to a suite of options, as set out in the attached policy (under Section 6).
