Response
Documentation or links provided as available below: Dyslexia policy and leaflets attached or on website at: (link below) (parent leaflets) Dyslexia Policy 2018 (scotborders.gov.uk) (policy) Operational Guidance for schools is attached as a separate document. Dysgraphia No Council guidelines available but as a service our focus is on functional need. Developmental Coordination Disorder Similarly our focus in on a child/ young person s functional need and support provided can be supported by NHS colleagues in Children and Young People s Occupational Therapy. Some children may have underlying Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) but no specific functional needs, or some children may have functional needs as a result of motor skill difficulties, but these needs are managed without the need for a diagnosis. From an education perspective we have access to OT service for consultation and advice regarding any concerns we may have around a child or young person s function if we suspect or think that this is due to a motor skill difficulty. Dyscalculia SBC follow the national guidance and approach as set out at following link: Dyscalculia | Resources | Education Scotland Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) SBC do not have information currently in this area but endorse information available nationally from Education Scotland: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) | Supporting neurodiversity | Resource Lists | Resources | Education Scotland Developmental Language Disorder Language Disorder is a diagnosis which can only be made in the UK following assessment by a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT). It is listed as Language Disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM5) used by health practitioners to differentiate from language delay, so as to make clear that it is a persistent language disorder, likely to impact throughout life, rather than a delay which will resolve fully. Schools in Scottish Borders are encouraged to raise concerns about a young person s speech and language development in general with the local NHS SLT service. Following diagnosis speech and language therapy service therapists will feed this back to the family, young person and education colleagues and it would be considered at that stage whether an onwards referral to the (Education) Language and Communication Service is appropriate. Language disorders may co-occur with a range of other difficulties and our local CYP Speech and Language Therapy Team seek to provide support at universal, targeted and individual level to support the children within the Scottish Borders. They provide a wide range of materials and resources. A leaflet for teachers on DLD as used by the local SLT service is attached and also an education leaflet on the Language and Communication Service. The Council education service also endorses information available nationally from Education Scotland: Language or speech disorder | Disability and health | Specific support needs | Additional support | Parentzone Scotland | Parentzone Scotland (education.gov.scot) Please note, in relation to this whole response, that whilst we recognise that some of the terms used to request education information originate from longstanding health classification/diagnostic labelling systems, we will try to avoid using, where appropriate to do so, condition labels that construct neurodevelopmental differences as disorders
