Pupils enter Jedburgh Grammar Campus

Jedburgh Grammar Campus has been shortlisted for one of Scotland’s most prestigious architecture awards, the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) Awards 2022.

The awards celebrate architectural excellence in Scotland and this year’s shortlist features some of the most creative and forward thinking projects from across the country including new school and college buildings, restoration projects and pioneering low energy homes.

Modern learning environment

The Campus, which was officially opened in 2020, was designed to reimagine and support modern learning, including moving away from the traditional school model and focused on the accessibility, flexibility, utilisation and usefulness of the facility and its spaces to better suit the needs of learners and the community.

The driving force behind the design was allowing the pupils to take ownership of these spaces and encourage them to curate their own learning and in doing so creating more nurturing, playful, and dynamic places.

It features large open place studio spaces designed for early learners right through to school leavers, helping to maximise learning opportunities. It also acts as a key community facility directly benefiting local residents. The building was also designed and fitted out to complement our award-winning Inspire Learning programme.

Susan Oliver, Head teacher at Jedburgh Grammar Campus

“Since Jedburgh Grammar Campus has been open to children and young people, and more recently community members, we have received a wide range of positive feedback about the fantastic new opportunities the facility offers and also the smoother transition for children moving between stages.

“The open and flexible layout has led to greater collaboration between teachers, ensuring a better learning experience for our children and young people.  More than ever before, staff across all stages are working in partnership with their colleagues and our pupils to deliver an excellent learning experience.  The visibility of learning promotes improved professional standards, as teachers at a glance are able to see innovative practice of their colleagues, leading to a raising of standards for all.

“The comprehensive IT infrastructure has enabled a rapid improvement in the digital literacy of staff and pupils alike. The opportunities afforded by the new building allow us to fully exploit the benefits offered by digital technology.”

Councillor Carol Hamilton, Executive Member for Children and Young People

“As a Council, SBC has identified modernising our education facilities as a key strategic priority to help provide a world-class education to our children and young people and in turn help promote a more prosperous region.

“As part of that vision we are committed to transforming the education experience by creating more flexible and dynamic spaces that we hope will become the national benchmark for education settings.”

Judging

The panel of judges will score each project based on their architectural integrity, sustainability, usability, context, delivery and execution.

The winners will go on to form the longlist for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award.

The winners of the RIAS Awards 2022 will be announced in June.
