The re-occupation of Peebles High School will go-ahead on 3 and 4 February as planned.

S4-S6 pupils will return on Monday 3 February, following the conclusion of their prelim exams. These exams were accommodated within the new games hall complex at the school, with study support space provided in the assembly hall.

S1-S3 pupils will return the following day, and are asked to work from home on the 3rd, with work provided on the Show my Homework app and Glow.

A small number of pupils with complex needs will continue to be educated for the time being at the specialist facility at Galashiels Academy, where they have been based since 3 December and have settled in well. Plans to accommodate these pupils within Peebles are being developed.

Our Chief Executive, Tracey Logan:

“Phasing the return of pupils enables us to manage the preparations effectively. One of the most challenging elements is moving from the seven temporary S1-S3 teaching sites in Peebles from the end of the school day on Friday 31 January, hence the additional day to complete this.

“An enormous amount of work has been needed to get us to the position of having all year groups back together in one location – something parents have consistently told us was very important to them. To be in a position to do this so quickly is testament to the efforts of all concerned, and the support provided to us by a wide range of partners.

“We do still have work to complete on site, and additional classroom and changing room space will also be opened up in modular buildings later in February, but we are now confident that the return of pupils can take place.”

Inspire Learning to be rolled out

The planned rollout of the Inspire Learning programme will also go ahead as scheduled. A series of events for parents will take place from 3 February, which will also include the opportunity to tour the re-configured school site.

Ms Logan added: “In preparing for the reoccupation of the school we have been able to install the infrastructure to facilitate the Inspire Learning rollout and I am delighted that we can start this the first week back at the school.”

An options appraisal is being undertaken to evaluate all potential options for the long term future of the Peebles High School site.

The appraisal will be used to support future consultation with the community and inform discussions with the Scottish Government, which has indicated its support for the Council in achieving the best possible final outcome. It is anticipated that the appraisal will be complete before the Easter break.

We are also proceeding with a major insurance claim with respect to direct and consequential losses and cost incurred as a result of the fire.
