Emergency Control Centre open
Our emergency control centre is operational over the weekend and Monday as we continue to respond to and carefully plan what's required for the school following Thursday's fire.
We are concentrating on key areas including:
- Recovery of staff and pupils' personal effects
- Arrangements for pupils and staff from Tuesday 3 December
Peebles High School will not reopen before the Christmas break
Despite the brilliant efforts of the firefighters on site, the fire that broke out on Thursday has resulted in significant damage, especially in the old gymnasium, art classrooms and surrounding areas. Other parts of the campus, including the tower block, have also been badly affected by smoke damage.
We are working closely with the school's management team to organise learning plans for each year group while the school is shut. This will include using other locations for classes as well as some online learning.
Pupils with complex needs will be attending classes at Galashiels Complex Needs centre.
Chief Executive, Tracey Logan
“This fire has resulted in some serious damage to the school and it just wouldn’t be safe or practical to open it without taking time to properly assess the damage and plan the recovery. To minimise disruption we’ve taken a swift decision to close it right through to the Christmas break.
"We’re making sure we have plans in place to ensure pupils have the best learning experience possible and are supported appropriately for the remaining 14 school days left before the holidays. There will be a particular focus on helping pupils who are preparing to sit prelim exams.”
Polling station for General Election
- The old gymnasium at the high school was scheduled to be a polling station for the General Election on 12 December.
- Anyone who was due to cast their vote there should now do so at Priorsford Primary School.
- This means Priorsford Primary will now close to pupils on 12 December.
