An acclaimed Scottish children’s author is donating a magical new novel study pack to support schools and improve literacy around Scotland.

Pupils at Philiphaugh Community School in Selkirk have been given the chance to experience the materials for the first time at a special event held on 16 May to celebrate the launch of the initiative in the Borders.

AH Proctor, author of the enchanting Thumble Tumble adventure series set on the Isle of Arran, has created the engaging pack in partnership with leading educational experts to ensure that the pack meets all the requirements for the Curriculum for Excellence.

Through the novel study packs, children will be encouraged to discover the magical world of Thumble Tumble. Aimed at Primary 4-6, the activities within the pack explore tools for a range of things including:

  • reading
  • words and phrases
  • characterisation
  • listening activities
  • creating texts

AH Proctor

“Literacy is a priority for all of our amazing schools in Scotland, but these are tough times, and many are having to use dated materials to support activity because they just don’t have the budget. This breaks my heart. The imagination and creativity that inspires the future generations of authors, playwrights, poets and songwriters, is born from the inspiration and education we discover in our childhood. Indeed, my successful Thumble Tumble adventure series would never have been possible without the magical experiences I had at school as a child. To help make sure that Scotland continues to be a world leader in creativity, I decided to create a new novel study that will give schools the magical key to unlock the most creative minds.”

Councillor Carol Hamilton, Executive Member Children and Young People

“We are delighted to be working in partnership with AH Proctor with plans already in place to promote the study pack in primary schools right across the Borders. Her commitment to supporting young learners to develop their literacy skills and engage with their imagination is inspirational and I have no doubt that our pupils will thoroughly enjoy their exploration of the magical world that she has created, with all the benefits that this will bring them.”
