Oxton will celebrate the opening of its new play park with a community picnic event this Saturday.
We have worked together with Oxton and Channelkirk Community Council to organise Picnic in the Park, which will see a number of activities and attractions take place from 11am to 3pm in Oxton Public Park.
What will be happening on the day?
- The park will be opened by three local schoolchildren who have been nominated for the role
- Live music
- A chance to try a number of sports with Live Borders
- Children’s entertainers Gus and Oli
- Local group the Riddell Fiddles
- Galashiels Town Band
- Face painting
- Opportunity to look inside a fire engine and ambulance.
Community space investment
The new £60,000 facility is being funded by us as part of a £3.1million investment over the next four years in new play parks, skate park and pump tracks and other outdoor community facilities.
Oxton play park follows the opening of the Rowan Boland play park in Galashiels in May, as well as investments in facilities in Hawick, Selkirk and Lauder in recent years.
A number of other new facilities are due to be built in the coming years as part of the £3.1m investment.
Convener, Councillor David Parker
“I am delighted that we have another play area to open, following so soon after Party in the Park which saw £2,500 raised for local charities at the opening the hugely popular Rowan Boland play park.
“There are plans for further new outdoor play facilities in the Borders to encourage young people across the region to keep active.
“I know there is real excitement in Oxton and I would encourage as many people as possible to come along on Saturday for what should be a great day.”
