A fundraiser from Hawick has been presented with a British Empire Medal (BEM) for her services to charity.

Isabella Halliday received the honour from the Lord-Lieutenant of Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale, the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry KT in Newtown St Boswells on Monday 23 July.

Mrs Halliday has raised around £60,000 over the past 20 years for CHAS, to support sick children in Scotland.

She has achieved this by organising car boot and table-top sales, making and selling marmalade and jam, arranging charity 'pop-up' shops, and holding an annual lunch for around 180 people.

“It was a great honour to meet Isabella Halliday and present her with this British Empire Medal. Each year she works tirelessly to raise money for sick children and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

“Mrs Halliday is a credit to her community and a worthy recipient of this honour.”

Vice Lord-Lieutenant appointed

It was also announced that Mrs Philippa Lee of Sandystones, Ancrum has been commissioned to the role of Vice Lord-Lieutenant, replacing Sir Michael Strang Steel who retired in February.

The Vice Lord-Lieutenant stands in place of the Lord-Lieutenant when he is absent, ill or otherwise unable to act.

Mrs Lee was commissioned as a Depute Lieutenant in February 2014.
