Scottish Borders Council (SBC) is supporting Adoption Week Scotland by hosting an information roadshow on Thursday 23 November from 4-7pm at the Interchange in Galashiels.

Adoption Week takes place this year from 20-25 November. We are raising the profile of adoption and highlighting the number of children who continue to need the love, stability and security that an adoptive home can offer.

Interested in adoption?

This is an opportunity for anyone interested in adopting to find out more and also, for anyone who has gone through the process to share their stories.

Along with ourselves, Adoption Week is supported by:

  • Adoption and Fostering Alliance Scotland
  • Adoption UK Scotland
  • Scottish Government

Join us in Galashiels for Adoption Week event

The Galashiels event is being held as part of the national campaign and will be of interest to prospective adopters, newly approved adoptive parents and anyone who wishes to find out more about adoption services in the Borders.

As well as being able to speak to officers from our Family Placement Team and voluntary agencies about local adoption services, you will be able to hear presentations by the Scotland Adoption Register, Adoption and Fostering Alliance Scotland and Adoption UK.

Topics will include:

  • how to find your birth family
  • the importance of adoption support
  • what advice and information is available

Lesley Mason, adoptive parent

“There is no doubt that adoption can be a challenging and emotional journey, filled with both stress and joy, but the knowledge that you are creating a forever home for a child that desperately needs one is what keeps you going. You may find yourself doubting your decision countless times - parenting is difficult enough anyway but with adoption you have the additional task of getting to know your child along with all the previous history that he or she brings with them - but eventually you will look back and realise that this has passed and that you have become a family.”

Cllr Tom Weatherston, Executive Member for Children and Families Social Work

“We have many wonderful foster carers here in the Borders without whom we could not provide the care and support needed by those children and young people going through a difficult time with their family relationships. Adoption is taking this to the next level where people are willing to open their hearts and their homes to a child or children on a permanent basis. As Lesley has said, it is not a step to be taken lightly but that does not mean people should not consider it if they have the space in their lives that only a child can fill.

“For anyone who is thinking about adoption, this event is the ideal opportunity to speak to the people who can provide the advice and information they need to help them understand the process and whether they are ready to make the important and life changing step of putting themselves forward for consideration.”
