Family and Dog Fun Day success

Wilton Lodge Park

Published: Tuesday, 11th July 2017

Over 200 people made their way to Wilton Lodge Park on Friday for our first ever Family and Dog Fun Day.

Entertainment ran throughout the day despite changeable weather, with over 70 pets entered into the various competitions including fun dog show.

What else was on offer?

  • Canine stunt team Les Amis d’Onno performed for the crowd, while there were activities for the whole family including a children’s colouring competition, doggie dash, tombola and competition prizes.
  • Those attending also received information about our responsible dog ownership strategy which aims to educate owners and members of the public on issues such as legal responsibilities, keeping a dog under control, what to do if you find a stray dog and the importance of keeping your dog’s microchip contact details up-to-date.
  • The event also provided opportunities for health checks, and microchipping was available.

Charities which attended on the day were Arthurshiel Rescue Centre, Borders Pet Rescue, Guide Dogs Scotland and PDSA.

Arthurshiel also received a donation of £102.61 from money raised from the day’s activities.

Councillor Sandy Aitchison, Executive Member for Neighbourhoods and Locality Services

“I am delighted that the first ever Family and Dog Fun Day run by the Council was a success.

“Alongside the fun activities and competitions, there was a serious message to get across on responsible dog ownership and initiatives such as the Green Dog Walker Scheme, which has seen around 200 people sign up since it was launched last year to help change attitudes about dog fouling in the Borders.

“Thank you to all charities, volunteers and sponsors who supported the event on the day and I hope to see this event become a fixture in the calendar for families and dog owners.”
