Super Sunday for cycling in Scottish Borders with Tour of Britain stage announced

The Tour of Britain will be back in the Borders in September 2017

Published: Tuesday, 25th April 2017

The Scottish Borders will play host to an amazing day of cycling on Sunday 3 September, when the OVO Energy Tour of Britain and the Tesco Bank Tour O’ The Borders coincide.

The OVO Energy Tour of Britain will start this year in Edinburgh and race through East Lothian and into the Scottish Borders. The route will take some of the world’s top cyclists into Kelso ahead of a 79km loop of the central Borders, including the iconic Scott’s View and Melrose, before the final sprint to the finish line in Kelso.

Second stage finish for Scottish Borders

This is the second time that the Scottish Borders has hosted a stage finish of the Tour, following a stage of the 2015 event concluding at Floors Castle, Kelso.

As Scotland’s leading cycling destination, the area has featured in the race on several other occasions, including stage starts in Peebles in 2013, 2011 and 2009, and also in Jedburgh in 2012.

Tracey Logan, Chief Executive of Scottish Borders Council

“We are delighted to be hosting our second Tour of Britain stage finish and are especially pleased to have the addition of the loop, which will showcase why this is Scotland’s leading cycling destination.

“This will also hopefully encourage thousands of spectators to make their way to Kelso to witness some of the world’s top cyclists race through the town twice. With the race also coming here on a weekend, we hope that the significant economic benefits it brings to the area will be even more substantial this year, as we look forward to welcoming visitors from across Scotland and beyond to what is the UK’s biggest free-to-spectate sporting event.”

“With the Tour of Britain’s visit coinciding with the annual Tour O’ The Borders sportive, the whole of the Borders will be buzzing with cyclists during the first weekend in September.

“The Scottish Borders is already widely recognised as Scotland’s leading cycling destination, with world class off-road trails and stunning on-road routes, and these events will further showcase the area’s credentials.”

The opening stage will take in some truly wonderful and iconic scenery as it travels from Edinburgh, through East Lothian and onto the Scottish Borders, providing an amazing spectacle for spectators and riders alike.

“Scotland is the perfect stage for cycling events and the Tour of Britain is fantastic race that brings strong economic and social benefits to the country. EventScotland is proud to be long-term partner of the event.”
