Walking project achieves dementia friendly accreditation

Walk It walks

Published: Thursday, 2nd March 2017

A number of walks delivered through the Scottish Borders Walking for Health project, Walk It, have been officially accredited as dementia friendly.

The project, jointly delivered by ourselves and NHS Borders, has grown gradually over the years, with almost 30 walks now in place across the Borders’ main towns and a number of smaller settlements.

Dementia friendly walks

Seven of those are now officially accredited as dementia friendly following training for 17 Walk It walk leaders. This looked at the practicalities of making walks dementia friendly, including

  • routes
  • risk assessments
  • the role of the walk leader
  • communication with people living with dementia

Training for walk leaders

Further training for Walk It leaders will take place in the spring, with the aim of gaining the accreditation for more of the walks in the project.

Councillor Catriona Bhatia, Depute Leader, with responsibility for Health Service, and a non-executive director of NHS Borders

“I am delighted that through this project we have been able to deliver a series of regular walks across the region that are accessible to people living with dementia, and look forward to even more receiving official accreditation in due course.”

Walk It walks are:

  • accessible to all
  • social
  • safe
  • led by a qualified walk leader
  • free
