Sports Development
There are a number of principles which underpin the work of the Sports Development Unit
Developing sport by focussing on local needs. The Sports Development Unit approaches its activity by:
-
Developing sport and physical activity opportunities which are fun, informal and easily accessed.
-
Recognising that people may perceive their needs as both social and sporting and that the sports need is part of a wider set of needs.
-
Finding out through consultation what particular groups of local people need
-
Uncovering the barriers to participation for specific groups
-
Keeping provision simple especially at the start of new projects
-
Understanding that face-to-face contact is often the best way to get individuals to take part in sport for the first time
-
Encouraging the use of all venues including Sports Centres, Community Halls, Schools, and the Natural Environment.
Developing Sport through a Local Infrastructure and Building Partnerships. Sports Development is concerned with developing
and building partnerships with voluntary and community groups, schools, sports clubs (Club Development) and sports facilities
(including equipment and transport). All are key elements in developing a local sporting infrastructure.
The Local Sports Councils are at the hub of this partnership working and you can access the Sports Council in your area:
