Active Schools and School Sport
“More People, More Active, More Often”
Active Schools is a key element in the Scottish Government’s drive to get more people more active; a commitment outlined in the National Physical Activity Strategy, ‘Let’s Make Scotland More Active’. sportscotland is playing a lead role in developing, supporting and monitoring the Active Schools Network across Scotland. Since its launch in 2004, the Active Schools Network has had a significant catalytic impact in schools across Scotland.
Aims and Key Objectives of Active Schools
The fundamental aim of the Active Schools is to offer all children and young people the opportunities andmotivation to adopt active, healthy lifestyles, now and into adulthood.
Active Schools Managers and Coordinators look to achieve this aim by focusing on three key work areas,
• Building a sustainable infrastructure of volunteers & coaches within the school and wider community.
• Working to ensure pathways are in place for lifelong participation.
• Targeting ‘Hard to Reach’ groups including girls, children with a disability and inactive children.

Active Schools in the Scottish Borders
The Borders Active School team consists of a Manager, an Assistant Manager and a team of 11 Coordinators; 7 of which are full time and working within their cluster area primary schools and 4 Coordinator who are part time and cover all 9 secondary schools within the Borders. The role of the Active Schools Coordinator is to support current, and develop new, high quality opportunities for school pupils to participate in regular, frequent, safe and fun physical activity (incorporating sport, play, health and active travel).

Working with Active Schools
Active Schools relies heavily on a huge support network of people to make things happen. This support network provides coaching, leadership, raising funds, helping with transport, administration duties and generally assisting with activities. Volunteering with Active Schools is very simple and the Active Schools Coordinators can offer full support and training.
