Scenic Driving Route - West Borders
As a guide, this route is about 65 miles long and should have a driving time of about 2 hours
- Take the A7 out of Hawick towards Galashiels, for approx 11 miles through Ashkirk to Selkirk.
- In Selkirk Square leave the A7 onto the A707 towards Peebles.
- In around ¾ mile turn left onto the A 708 towards Moffat.
- Follow the A708 through the Yarrow Valley for around 16 miles, passing through the villages of Yarrowford and Yarrow and crossing the B709 at the Gordon Arms Hotel.
- At Cappercleuch, take the unclassified road to Meggethead and Talla.
Past the Megget reservoir and in about 6 miles, just over the highest point on the road, a breathtaking view of the Talla reservoir will become visible. - Retrace your steps to Cappercleuch. At this point you may wish to make a short diversion by turning right for a short distance to the café at St Mary's Loch for refreshments.
- Return to Cappercleuch and on to the Gordon Arms Hotel. Turn right on to the B709 to Tushielaw and Langholm.
- Follow the B709 for about 6½ miles to the Tushielaw Hotel. You can stay on the B709 here to explore the upper reaches of the Ettrick Valley or turn left on to the B711 for about 16 miles through Roberton to meet the A7 at Martinshouse.
- Turn left onto the A7 for about 1½ miles to return to Hawick.
