Winter Travel Page
Winter can pose problems for travellers of any kind. Whether you drive a vehicle, ride a horse or walk, extra care has to be taken when preparing and undertaking journeys.
The Council has a responsibility to help you in this. We aim to assist all road users in poor weather conditions by providing a service that we consider reasonable to prevent snow and ice making roads and footways hazardous, within the financial and operational resources available to us. Every year, plans are carefully drawn up to treat roads and footways when they are liable to be covered with ice or snow, and also to clear them after bad weather has occurred.
Our approach to winter service is laid out in our Winter Service Plan that is based on a national Code of Practice called "Delivering Best Value in Highway Maintenance - Code of Practice for Maintenance Management".
We also produce a helpful pamphlet, in consultation with the emergency services, called 'Winter Travel - a little care gets you there', in which we give information and advice on winter driving in the Borders. Download a copy.
Trunk roads are managed and maintained by BEAR on behalf of Transport Scotland, including all aspects of the winter service. Consequently, any query regarding Trunk Road Winter Service on the A1, A68, A7 (south of Galashiels), A6091 and A702 should be directed to BEAR on on 0800 138 9903 or through their website enquiries.
