The road network is an important asset in the Scottish Borders as road transport is the most practical choice for travel in the area. Roads must be kept and enhanced where suitable to promote:
- economic development
- tourism
- social inclusion.
The Scottish Borders is Scotland's sixth largest local authority area and has a total population of roughly 112,000. The low density population means that as well as long journeys to centres outside the region there are also many journeys to reach:
- educational facilities
- medical facilities
- shopping facilities etc.
Our region has one of the most extensive road networks in Scotland with about 1,900 miles of adopted routes.
Trunk roads
Certain major roads known as trunk roads are not our responsibility. These include:
- A7 south of Galashiels
- A68
- A1
- A702
- A6091.
Transport Scotland is responsible for trunk roads and queries should be made to their operating company BEAR Scotland.
