Public Transport

The Council attempts to maintain and enhance a transport service that provides the public with alternatives to the car, and fulfils a commitment to sustainability and promotion of social inclusion. In addition to buses that run regularly on a fixed timetable, we are now experimenting with 'demand responsive transport' routes in rural areas that only run if passengers ask for them to.
The Council has a significant input to public transport in the Borders, even if this is not very apparent in the end product of running buses and taxis. The Council tenders and pays for the provision of socially important routes or specific journeys linking key settlements, where these are not provided by the commercial sector. It also administers concessions for elderly and some disabled people to travel on public transport.
In addition to this, the Council licenses taxis and monitors compliance with licence conditions by taxi operators.
