Information about Galashiels & Registration Centre
Galashiels
Galashiels, which lies at the base of the steep sided valley of the Gala Water, close to its meeting with the majestic River
Tweed, lies at the heart of Borders country.
The town’s name, first recorded in 1124, is partly derived from the adjacent river, Gala Water, and from ‘shiels’ meaning
dwellings. Known to locals as ‘Gala’, the town has a marvellous history with links to William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, and
‘Black Douglas’. Amongst others are Robert Burns, who re-wrote the song ‘Braw Lads o’ Galla Water’ during the poet’s ‘pilgrimage’
across the Borders.
The town is also renowned for its part in the once booming ‘tweed’ industry helped by Sir Walter Scott’s canny marketing technique
during his visits to London.
