Population

The number of people in the Scottish Borders was estimated to be 111,430 on 30 June 2007. This has risen by 1.1% since 2006. The General Register Office for Scotland suggests this increase is due to people moving into the area.

Population projections

The General Register Office for Scotland also calculates population projections. The Scottish Borders is predicted to have a population of 112,726 by 2010, growing to 127,390 in 2031. More detailed information is available from the General Register Office for Scotland website.

Population density

The Scottish Borders has 24 persons per square kilometre, compared to 66 persons per square kilometre for Scotland. The population density of the Scottish Borders is the fourth lowest in mainland Scotland.

Population of settlements

The population of settlements in the Scottish Borders was calculated using the Census data. The town boundaries are the same as those used in the Development Plan. Please note these boundaries differ from those used by the General Register Office for ScotlandSettlement population figures for 2001 are available. The General Register Office has recently produced estimated populations for some of the settlements for 2006, which can be downloaded.
