Streetscape works in Galashiels
Published on Tuesday 13th December 2011
Works will continue in Market Square and at the top of Channel Street in Galashiels in early February 2012, weather permitting.
The works will focus on major improvements to Market Square - to create an attractive pedestrian orientated link from the newer developments and the town centre. The layout of the square will be refreshed to enhance all of the green spaces, with natural stone being used on the surface and the flower beds to improve the appearance and perception of the area. The improvements to the pedestrian zone at the top of Channel Street will look to create an events space within the centre of town, with the reduction of the existing street furniture and the control of traffic movements through the area.
It is also proposed to simplify the junction arrangements at Cornmill Square/Paton Street/Albert Place prior to April 2012. In addition to the junction works more space for pedestrians is proposed alongside further pedestrian improvements, to be undertaken in the new financial year (2012/13).
All of the designs for the civic spaces have been developed using comments received at the public exhibition held in November 2010. Consultation has continued with the Roads Consultation Group, which is made up from representatives from the Galashiels community.
The remainder of the town centre enhancements will be delivered in 2012/13 in Market Street and the High Street, which will consist of footway widening, maximising parking provisions and the formalisation of a delivery point for businesses.
