Borders SFA coaching courses attract record numbers
Monday, October 24 2005
A record-breaking number of Borders' primary school children attended football coaching courses run by the Scottish Football Association and Scottish Borders Council over the recent October school break.
Boys and girls of primary age had the chance to have fun and improve their playing skills at a range of courses by qualified, SFA coaches in Duns, Eyemouth, Galashiels, Kelso and Peebles.
The record attendance figures build on the popularity of similar courses run at Easter and in the Summer, all of which, according to SFA Football Development Officer Drew Kelly, have made 2005 a great year for junior football in the Borders.
"The popularity of the SFA holiday courses is due to their high quality, plus the excellent work done week in week out at the many SFA Football Centres and football clubs throughout the region," he said.
"It is wonderful that so many boys and girls are now playing football in the Scottish Borders, particularly at a time when the Government is looking to promote healthy lifestyles. The partnership between the Scottish FA and SBC enables us to continue developing a local football programme that meets the ever-increasing demand for our National Sport."
Councillor Andrew Farquhar, SBC Executive Spokesman for Education, added, "Active children are more likely to grow into active
adults, and that is good news for the health of the country. A child who starts playing a sport at primary school has a better
chance of playing well in adult life. We encourage initiatives such as the SFA holiday coaching courses as a first step towards
developing Scotland as a sporting nation."
