Free compost workshops

Tuesday, October 4 2005

To help residents with their garden waste, Scottish Borders Council is providing special free composting workshops this weekend. Hosted by the Scottish Borders' own compost guru, Dave Allan, these sessions will explain how to turn garden waste into garden gold dust.

On both Saturday and Sunday (8 and 9 October) there will be two workshops (one at 11am and one at 3pm) at the Woodside Walled Garden, near Harestanes Visitor Centre, on B6400, off the A68 three miles north of Jedburgh. The walled garden includes a special compost demonstration area.

These home composting workshops are part of the council's waste management strategy which aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. Much garden waste has in the past been sent unnecessarily to landfill: it is one type of waste that can be effectively reduced at home.

Dave Allen will offer novice composters the techniques to make successful compost and advice on ways of dealing with different types of garden waste. He will also be helping established composters get more out of their green waste.

Further information on home composting is available from ASK Organic on 01450 860778 or visit www.askorganic.co.uk.
