Council to remove unwanted cars for free

Monday, August 29 2005

Unsightly and potentially dangerous, abandoned cars are a blot on any rural or urban landscape. But now Scottish Borders Council is launching a new service to remove unwanted vehicles free of charge before they are dumped.

Under the new scheme, which is financed by the Scottish Executive, SBC is also offering to remove disused and unwanted farm appliances from outhouses and steadings.

"Abandoned cars are a dangerous hazard as well as an eyesore. They may be full of broken glass and harmful materials and are often set alight," explained Ken Jones, SBC's Environmental Health Manager.
"Anyone who wants to get rid of a car that is no longer working will be able to contact the Council and we will arrange for it to be taken to an approved scrapyard and disposed of in an environmentally safe way."

Councillor David Paterson, SBC Executive Spokesman for Technical Services, said, "This is a great initiative by Scottish Borders Council and should put people's mind at rest that, if they want to get rid of an unwanted car, they can do so at no cost to themselves."

To apply to have an unwanted car removed, the owner should complete and return a request form available at Council area offices in Hawick, Galashiels, Peebles and Duns and on the SBC website.
