Melrose Pipes hit the big 50

Friday, August 5 2005

Melrose Pipe Band Championship and Highland Dance Contest St Mary's School, Melrose Saturday, 20 August 11am - 5pm.

On August 20, more than 50 pipe bands from across Scotland and England will be converging on the Scottish Borders for this year's Melrose Pipe Band Championships and Highland Dance Contest.

The event, which appears on the piping calendar between the World Championships in Glasgow and the Cowal Highland Games, is also a showcase for international stars. This year, it is the turn of the pipers from the Royal Army of Oman from Muaskar Al Mutafa'a near Muscat to make a welcome return to the Borders.

The Highland Dance Competition will add to the entertainment, with entries from all over the world, including Australia, Canada and the USA.
It is an important day, too, for Borders dancers, as the Melrose competition is their chance to qualify for the Scottish Area Finals held in Oban each year.
The event, which is supported by the Kilt Shop, Galashiels, includes a bar and refreshment area, marketplace and fun fair. Parking is free and entry prices are £4.50 for adults, £3.50 for concessions and £1.00 for under-16s.
