Wheeled recycling bin deliveries start
Thursday, February 4 2010
By the end of March, every household in the Borders with suitable storage space will receive a free blue-lidded recycling wheeled bin with a reusable storage sack and an information guide – to help residents to recycle more efficiently.
Approximately 41,000 households will be receiving the bins during the first phase of delivery, which is currently underway. The wheeled bins should be used as soon as they are delivered and put out on the kerbside on the normal recycling collection day. Materials can be placed loose in the bin and do not need to be bagged.
The leaflet delivered with each bin provides information on a range of Council waste services including; recycling, garden waste and composting, general waste, recycling points, special uplifts and community recycling centres.
The remaining 15,000 properties in the Borders, which will receive a supply of recycling sacks, should continue to recycle using these until such time as a further assessment can be made.
The types of properties that may not receive a recycling bin during the first phase are:
• those where there is no, or extremely limited, storage space i.e. flats or terraced properties and some town and village high street properties
• those which are currently blue bag users
• those where recycling bins would result in a potential hazard for road users and pedestrians
• those where checks need to be made in terms of land ownership prior to locating bins (therefore some road-end locations).
From April onwards the Council will be assessing whether these households are suitable for recycling bins or require an alternative solution. Alternative solutions may include:
• the issue of larger or smaller recycling bins
• the shared use of larger recycling bins
• the introduction of communal wheeled bins for recycling (either on or off street)
• the continued use of recycling bags
Councillor Len Wyse, Executive Member for Environmental Services, said: “We are pleased to introduce these recycling bins to Border residents as it gives them somewhere specific to store their items for recycling. Householders have always been very proactive in accepting changes to their waste collection services and I hope they will fully support this initiative. Householders continuing to use recycling bags may be contacted by Council staff regarding the options available and will be advised of any developments in their collections in due course.”
Alternate weekly collections will be phased in throughout the Borders during summer/autumn 2010. For any queries relating to recycling please contact 0300 100 1800 or visit www.scotborders.gov.uk/recycling
