Scottish Borders Council has welcomed the announcement by Finance Secretary John Swinney today that the procurement process to appoint a contractor to take forward construction of the Borders Railway will be started before the end of the year.
Council Leader David Parker said: “This is excellent news for the Borders. The Borders Railway is key to the future economic growth of the area so I am delighted to hear that the project is absolutely on track. I am sure the majority of Borderers will warmly welcome this announcement.”
Executive Member for Planning and Environment, Carolyn Riddell-Carre, said: “It is well known that a strong infrastructure is essential for the Borders to continue to grow and prosper. The railway will provide an essential link from the Borders to Edinburgh and beyond. I hope that this step means that the line will become a reality. If so, it is fantastic news.”
Depute Leader Alec Nicol said: “The touch-paper has now been lit to get this project started. The Borders railway is an essential resource for the future of the area so to hear that this progress is now being made is very welcome indeed.”
