Summer youth traditional music courses
Monday, June 29 2009
Pupils in the Borders have a chance to enjoy special new traditional music and song courses this summer.
Sing Harmony, taking place in Heart of Hawick from 6-8 July, is open to all secondary pupils and will cover warm-ups, harmony singing and songs from around the world, all led by Rita Hunter, Scottish Borders Council’s Traditional Song Development Worker.
Sharing Heart of Hawick on these same dates, Shona Mooney, Traditional and World Music Development Worker will lead Youth Fiddle workshops including Come & Try, Borders Fiddling and Fiddle around the World, offering beginners and those with two or more years’ experience some very enjoyable summer traditional tunes.
Later in July, Shona and Rita will be launching an exciting new folk band course, running for three days in the Eastgate Arts Centre, Peebles, from 28-30 July. This Flying Folk course is open to secondary pupils who have been singing or playing a traditional music instrument for two years or more and are now ready to play together in a band.
Special guest tutor Innes Watson will join the Flying Folk team as chord tutor. Flying Folk promises to be great fun and very rewarding and will include tune arrangements, finding the groove, beginnings, endings and dynamics and creating sets of tunes.
All of the above courses are free to participants and are provided by the SBC’s Arts Service and Youth Music Initiative programme.
