SBC welcomes newly qualified teachers
Monday, August 18 2008
A total of 42 newly qualified teachers (NQTs) will join primary and secondary schools across the region this week to start Scottish Borders Council’s nationally recognised and highly regarded teacher induction scheme.
In order to teach in schools in Scotland, teachers must complete a one-year training post and register with the General Teaching Council for Scotland. This year, SBC welcomes 29 primary and 13 secondary NQTs to its schools.
Executive Member for Education, Councillor Catriona Bhatia said: “We are delighted to welcome the NQTs to our schools this year. I am sure they will bring great enthusiasm for teaching and learning to classrooms across the Borders.”
SBC’s Teacher Induction Scheme comprises:
- training in key aspects of the curriculum, ICT, behaviour management, arts and key educational policies
- class commitment time of three and a half days per week
- one and a half days per week for professional development
- access to an experienced teacher who will act as a mentor
- access to a named support teacher who help plan and deliver training days for both the NQT and their mentor.
During the scheme, NQTs are kept up to date with current educational practice and continue to develop their knowledge and experience through observing and taking advice from experienced colleagues within their schools.
