Work starts on Chirnside’s new MUGA
Friday, July 4 2008
Pupils from Chirnside Primary School have ben joined by members of the local community and special guests to celebrate the start of work on their new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA).
The facility, which was one of three successful Berwickshire projects to receive funding from The Big Lottery Fund’s People’s Millions TV competition back in November 2007, will provide a synthetic pitch for the whole community.
Russell Leisure Ltd, the main contractors for the work alongside James Stewart & Son of Kelso, started work onsite this week. To celebrate, Councillor Frances Renton, Scottish Borders Council’s Children’s Champion, cut the first sod on the site – located just behind the school at the special ceremony last week.
She said: “I am truly honoured to be here today to celebrate the start of work on a project which is very much the culmination of years and years of hard work by the school and the local community. I would like to thank everyone involved in the project, including the Big Lottery Fund for their generous financial contribution. I very much look forward to coming back after the summer holidays to see everyone’s dreams come true.”
The project was led by Chirnside Primary School and Chirnside Development Group. Following many years of work and dedication, the project group managed to secure a total of £102,000 to enable the project to go ahead. This includes £80,000 from The Big Lottery Fund, £10,000 from Scottish Football Association (SFA) and £12,000 from developer contributions.
The MUGA will take approximately five weeks to construct and will be completed before the school goes back after the summer.
