Mountain of the Gods exhibition at Peebles
Wednesday, July 2 2008
An exhibition of textiles and photographs by two artists based in Tyne & Wear has opened at ‘The Gallery’ in the Tweeddale Museum in Peebles.
Inspired by the culture, landscape and wildlife of Africa, textile artist Barbara Reed’s passion for all things African began in the 1970s when she moved to Uganda with her husband to teach art.
Some years later she became the Curator of Art at the Botswana National Museum and this exposure to African art and culture became a focus for her own art.
In this collaborative venture with photographer Tim French and pupils of Washington School in Tyne & Wear, the theme of the show is the rock art of the Tsodilo Hills in Botswana.
Using striking colours and rhythmic patterns to portray the myths and legends of the area, Barbara has also created giant sized exotic insects including mopane worms, hedgehog flies, dung beetles and praying mantis.
Elizabeth Hume, Scottish Borders Council’s Visual Arts Officer is delighted to have Barbara’s work back in the Borders:
“I decided to bring Barbara Reed’s work back to the Borders after she had a hugely popular show at Hawick Museum a couple of year’s ago entitled ‘African Insect Safari’. Her sense of colour and design and Tim’s photography skills brilliantly capture the essence of Africa and make ‘Mountain of the Gods’ one of the must-see exhibitions in this year’s gallery programme.”
The exhibition runs from now until 20 August 2008
Open: Mon – Fri 10.30am – 12.30pm & 1pm – 4pm; Sat 10pm – 1pm & 2pm – 4pm.
