Look out Gretna – here comes Coldstream!

Thursday, May 8 2008

The number of civil marriages at Coldstream are at a record high.

Since the launch of the Coldstream Marriage Room six months ago there have been 18 civil ceremonies booked compared with just five for the whole of the previous year.

The brochure created for the Coldstream Marriage Room has also gained new advertisers and has attracted a lot of interest both locally and nationally.  The website www.coldstreamweddings.co.uk has also been successful in drawing more couples to the town. Enquiries are even starting to build up for 2009.

One local business owner said that her sales had increased by 50 per cent following the opening of the marriage room.

Councillor Vicky Davidson, Executive Member for Economic Development, said: “A lot of work went into the refurbishment of the Coldstream Marriage Room, and it has also been quite heavily promoted since its official opening. All that hard work is now starting to pay off, and it’s good news for this area of the Borders and for many of our local businesses.

“If the popularity of Coldstream as a marriage venue continues to grow, we may even start to rival Gretna!”

John Nicholls MBE, Coldstream District Registrar, said: “The popularity of the Marriage Room is booming and it is easy to see why. We have a romantic history of couples coming over the border to tie the knot and an unspoilt location and are attracting couples not only from the Borders but also from places further afield such as East Lothian, Lancashire, Birmingham, London, Lincolnshire and France. It is all very exciting and I truly believe that Coldstream can eventually be put on the world map as the perfect place to get married. We try really hard to make every wedding individual and personal.”
