Czesc! Hello! A Polish Celebration
Wednesday, April 30 2008
Polish Constitution Day falls on the first Saturday in May. And to celebrate it with local Polish workers, the Eastgate Theatre in Peebles is hosting an evening of Polish food, music and film this Friday (2 May 2008).
Increasing numbers of Polish people are bringing their skills and enthusiasm to businesses in the area. Peebles Hotel Hydro and Stobo Castle Health Spa are just two of the local employers of Polish guest workers. Their stories will be told in a small display.
Lucy Lesniowska from Poland works at the Eastgate Theatre and is looking forward to the event.
She said: "It's a fun opportunity for local people to get a taste of Polish customs and culture and a good chance for me and other Polish folk working here to feel a welcome part of this community."
Scottish Borders Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Sport and Community Education, Councillor Graham Garvie, added: “Show Scotland has given us the funds to run this pilot event, which will lead to further involvement with this community, especially through the arts as part of the Polish Season in 2009-2010.”
The evening’s entertainment will include the screening of the 1996 action movie Street Games (in Polish with English subtitles) at 7.30pm.
During World War Two, Polish army units were posted to Scotland and the Black Barony (now the Barony Castle Hotel) in the nearby village of Eddleston was the staff college for Polish officers. A prized object that they donated to the local museum, a book of Polish folk dances, will also be on display.
Tickets for Friday’s event are £5 and include a feast of Polish food and drink. They are available from the Eastgate Theatre on 01721 725777 or www.eastgatearts
