Tuesday, April 29 2008
Scottish Borders Council has been named Local Authority of the Year by Tennis Scotland for its commitment to the sport across the region.
Councillor Calvert was delighted to receive the award on behalf of SBC: “The award is in recognition of the work which has been carried out to improve the quality of tennis facilities at a number of venues across the Borders. This could not have been completed without the excellent partnership working between Clubs, district and national tennis organisers, sponsors and the Council. The work of our Sports Development Unit was also congratulated for the hugely popular sports coaching and participation events which they organise throughout the Borders. These play a great part in offering coaching opportunities to young players across the region.”
Tennis Scotland is the governing body for the game of tennis in Scotland. David Marshall, Tennis Scotland’s Chief Executive Officer explained why SBC was chosen as the winner of this award: “SBC thoroughly deserves this award. Among many of the programmes, events and projects dedicated to Tennis, they also have a close partnership with Tennis Borders and Tennis Scotland in the delivery of Coach Education. They run an annual three-day residential tennis academy for promising players as well as an annual tournament for Secondary schools and mini tennis tournament for Primary schools. They have also been very proactive in facility developments through major resurfacing projects in Galashiels, Jedburgh and Kelso”.
Councillor Graham Garvie, Executive Member for Culture, Sport and Community Education added: “I would like to congratulate everyone who has helped the Council achieve this recognition from Tennis Scotland. We have a very committed and enthusiastic workforce dedicated to sport in the Borders, and we are very proud of this. This award is dedicated to these people who contribute to the development of tennis and many other sports which continue to be a success throughout our region.”
