Important education achievement recognised by Council
Tuesday, April 29 2008
Scottish Borders Council’s Education Executive met today (Tuesday 29 April) and approved the publication of the Education department’s Standards & Quality report.
Speaking after the meeting Councillor Bhatia, Executive Member for Education said “Since last May I have spent time visiting almost all of our schools in the Borders and have been very impressed by the many areas of good and innovative work undertaken by pupils and staff. There are some very important achievements captured in this report which should be celebrated by all in the Borders – including the work on enterprise education; eco schools and, perhaps the most important, the rising levels of attainment in Reading, Writing and Maths by our primary school pupils.
“Whilst it is important to ensure that we acknowledge success, and other notable initiatives such as links with schools in Africa and better ways to keep our children safe, the report is equally useful in identifying our shortcomings. I now have a better understanding of some of the challenges school face and as a Council we must address these to ensure the very best of opportunities for all children and young people in the Borders. The report also gives a good insight into our community services and we must ensure that educational, cultural and sporting opportunities are available to people of all ages and abilities” concluded Councillor Bhatia.
The full report can be downloaded from the council website and hard copies will be available from the Education department next week. A summary version of the report will also be published in the next issue of SBConnect.
