Scottish Borders Council supports Real Nappy Week

Monday, April 21 2008

This year, Real Nappy Week is concentrating on how parents can help to combat climate change by using real nappies. The 12th annual week co-ordinated by the National Real Nappy Campaign runs from 21 to 27 April.

Providing parents follow simple guidelines when using real nappies, there can be significant gains for the environment both in reduced greenhouse gases and household waste sent to landfill or incineration.

This message is particularly important in the Scottish Borders where the Council has made great strides in reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill. The UK currently throws away around 3 billion disposable nappies every year. They are estimated to weigh some 690,000 tonnes, most of which are landfilled where they generate methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

SBC’s Recycling Team works in partnership with the Borders Real Nappy Network (BRNN) to promote the use of real nappies as a way to cut waste. Parents interested in learning more about Real Nappies can contact BRNN on 08701430929.

Councillor Len Wyse, Executive Member for Environmental Services, said: “Real Nappy Week is the ideal time to take the first step and call BRNN. The members have a ‘nappy library’ - a selection of all of the different nappy types and accessories so parents can see the range available – and lots of sensible advice and support and they are real mums from our own community.”

Sally Gordon, spokesperson for the Real Nappy Campaign added: “We are delighted to be able to reassure parents that by using washable nappies they can reduce their impact on global warming and energy use as we are aware that these are key issues for families. In addition Real Nappy Week gives us the opportunity to promote the additional benefits of nappies including their cost savings, natural fabrics and the choice they represent for parents.”
