Are Borderers missing out on council tax discounts?

Monday, March 31 2008

Some Scottish Borders residents could be paying more than they should on their council tax if they don’t claim discounts or benefit.

Following the announcement that there would be no rise in council tax, Scottish Borders Council has now issued the bills for 2008-2009.

Anyone living alone can claim a 25 per cent discount. But residents may not realise that a discount can also be claimed in some instances, if there are other people living in the property who can be disregarded for council tax purposes. These include students, student nurses, apprentices, skill seekers, people with severe mental impairment and certain carers.

People on a low income with less than £16,000 in capital should contact the Council to apply for council tax benefit.

Anyone who would like more information should call 01450 364729, visit www.scotborders.gov.uk or call in at any Council contact centre.
