Summer Garden Waste collections return

Monday, March 24 2008

The Council’s popular kerbside collections of garden waste return on Monday, 31 March, 2008.

Gardeners in urban areas in the Scottish Borders will be able to put out their green-lidded garden waste wheeled bins on their collection day at 7am and have their grass clippings and prunings taken away.

“All the waste collected is composted by the Council which means it does not go to landfill, where it would harm the environment,” said Julie Rankine, SBC Waste Strategy Manager.

Last summer’s garden waste collections totalled more than 6000 tonnes, which is a significant amount of waste diverted from landfill.  Julie said: “We are delighted with the enthusiasm of our gardeners for the kerbside collections and we’d like to thank them for supporting this very important service and making it such a success.”

The kerbside garden waste collections will continue through the growing season until 31 October.

Householders are urged to ensure they use their garden waste bin for garden waste and not for storing recycling bags or general waste.  Unused garden waste bins may be removed if not being utilised.

Gardeners can also help reduce the amount of material that goes to landfill by composting their green waste at home. In addition to taking positive steps to protect the environment they will create compost which can be used as a soil conditioner to help improve their own gardens.

All Borders residents can now buy composters at special subsidised rates. The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has a range of composters which can be delivered direct to your door. More details on   www.wasteawarescotland.org.uk or telephone 0845 600 0323.

You can also take your garden waste to the Community Recycling Centres at Hawick, Galashiels, Selkirk, Duns, Eyemouth and Eshiels, near Peebles.

Further information about the garden waste collections and advice on home composting is available on the SBC website. www.scotborders.gov.uk/recycling

Advice on home composting is available from the Council’s composting Helpline on 01450 860 778 and from WRAP on 0845 0770756.
