‘Staying Alive’ Road Safety campaign getting the message across

Monday, March 10 2008

The Scottish Borders Council and Radio Borders ‘Staying Alive’ Road Safety campaign is now half way through its 14 week run. Radio Borders has been broadcasting a different safety message each week to help people improve their driving. This week’s message is:

“Always be aware of your surroundings and other vehicles around you. Always check your mirrors before braking, speeding up, over-taking or pulling out of a junction.  This will help prevent any collisions.  Always remember to check your blind spot.”

Everyone in the Borders can be part of the campaign by displaying a free ‘Staying Alive’ campaign sticker on their car.  These are available from:

-       Council contact centres

-       Radio Borders reception

-       Belmont Garage, Selkirk

-       Chrysties Furniture Centre, Hawick

-       Bannerman and Burke, Solicitors and Estate Agents, in Hawick, Galashiels and Kelso

-       The Black Bull, Earlston

-       Howden’s Joinery, Kelso

Every week car sticker spotters will be out and a weekly winner will be chosen.  Prizes still to be awarded include:

Week 8, 14th Mar: A round of golf for two at a prestigious Borders golf course

Week 9, 21st Mar: £100 cash

Week 10, 28th Mar: £100 supermarket voucher

Week 11, 4th Apr: An assessed drive with Lothian and Borders Police

Week 12, 11th Apr: £100 baby shop voucher

Week 13, 18th Apr: £100 carpet shop voucher

Week 14, 25th Apr:  A 'taster day' at a local health spa

Winning registration numbers will be announced on Radio Borders.

Last week’s winners, a retired couple from Coldstream, said they were looking forward to their night’s dinner, bed and breakfast at the Dryburgh Abbey.

Councillor Jim Fullarton, Executive Member for Roads and Infrastructure and Chair of the Scottish Borders Road Safety Working Group said: “We have some fantastic prizes and some really useful road safety tips to help all our road users travel in and around the Borders.”
