Work to begin on new Kingsland Primary School
Thursday, February 28 2008
Offsite work for the new Kingsland School at Neidpath Grazings will start soon.
It follows the unanimous approval of the trustees of the Common Good Fund of a report seeking consent to upgrade and adopt an existing informal footpath that will provide one of the links to the site.
This is part of the Council’s £33m investment in new primary schools: Denholm (replacing the fire damaged school); Lauder, Caddonfoot, West Linton and two schools in Peebles Kingsland at Neidpath Grazings and Halyrude, which will move into the refurbished school in Rosetta Road.
Scottish Borders Council Executive Member for Education, Councillor Catriona Bhatia, said: “After four years of consultation
and discussion I am thrilled that work is now beginning. The initial tasks will focus on providing safe access to the school
for pupils, staff and parents. As part of this, new lighting columns will be installed along the extended 30mph zone of the
A72. Hay Lodge car park will be upgraded, as will the footpath from the golf club and Wemyss Place.”
The new footpath and cycleway will improve and replace an existing path. The route runs down a steep incline from the golf club car park taking a route over land in SBC ownership and cutting between the property of Firknowe and the cemetery before going on to the existing car park adjacent to the A72.
The path is not presently maintained by the Council and is generally in poor condition, but the upgrading and adoption of path will make the facilities to the west of the town more accessible for the whole community.
The tender process to appoint a main contractor for the construction of the new Kingsland Primary School and a new school in Lauder is underway, with building on site on schedule to begin in July 2008.
