Future of Wilton Primary School Swimming Pool under review
Thursday, February 7 2008
The future of the swimming pool at Wilton Primary School in Hawick will be considered in a review by Scottish Borders Council.
The pool was closed as an interim measure in November 2007 due to various procedural and health and safety concerns.
Permanent closure of the pool had been recommended in the Council Administration’s draft budget proposals, announced this week. But it has now been withdrawn from the rationalisation list and will not be presented as part of the budget considerations for debate by Council next Thursday (14 February).
Councillor Catriona Bhatia, the Council’s Executive Member for Education, has asked the education department to bring forward a full report that details issues with the pool, together with potential short, medium and long term solutions for its future.
Councillor Bhatia explained: “The pool will remain closed until the review has been carried out and all relevant facts presented to elected members. In these circumstances it was necessary to remove the pool from budget proposals to ensure that the outcome of the review and consultation was not pre-judged.”
Depute Leader Councillor Neil Calvert said: “During the review, the Council will be consulting with parents and members of the community who are interested in the pool’s future and will present detailed feedback to Council.”
