Denholm Primary goes green
Monday, January 28 2008
The new Denholm Primary School, designed by the in-house architects at Scottish Borders Council, has been awarded grant assistance for its ground-breaking heating system.
The award, administered by the Energy Savings Trust on behalf of the Scottish Government, is worth up to £30,000 towards the cost of the new school’s sustainable heating system.
The Council’s Assistant Architectural Manager and Project Architect, Ray Cherry, said: “We are delighted to have been successful in obtaining this award. The ground source heating system is a first for Scottish Borders Council and this grant has made a significant difference in adopting such a green solution.”
The system takes heat from a number of boreholes that are being drilled around the new school and then circulates this via a heat pump through the building.
The heating is one of a number of positive environmental features being adopted in the new school building including a green roof over the assembly hall and a rainwater recycling system.
The new school is due to open in August this year.
