Council Convener supports Charlemagne Youth Prize
Monday, January 28 2008
Scottish Borders Council Convener Alasdair Hutton has welcomed a new European prize for young people launched this month and hopes it will attract projects from the Borders.
The Charlemagne Youth Prize targets people aged between 16 and 30 who have been involved with projects helping to promote understanding between peoples of different European countries.
Organised by the European Parliament and the Foundation of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen, the prize provides funding from €2,000 - €5,000 (£1250 - £3500) for existing projects that foster a shared sense of European identity and cooperation. The best projects from each of the 27 EU Member States will be invited to Aachen, in Germany, on 29 April 2008.
Councillor Hutton, who is responsible for European policy in Scottish Borders Council said: “This is another exciting opportunity for Borderers to compete with the best in Britain and show just how good we can be.
“We have welcomed many people from other European countries to the Borders and we have an opportunity to show how effective that can be. But the time is short and people need to move quickly to get applications in by the deadline of 8 February,” he said.
As well as promoting European and international understanding, the winning projects will serve as role models for young people living in Europe. In particular the organisers are looking for practical examples of Europeans living together. The projects can focus on the organisation of youth events, youth exchanges or internet projects with a European dimension.
Application forms are available on the European Parliament's UK Office website at: www.europarl.org.uk The deadline for applications is 8 February 2008. For more information, please contact caroline.boyle@europarl.europa.eu
