Council seeks views on future of Chambers Institution
Thursday, December 20 2007
As the 150th anniversary of the gift of the Chambers Institution to Peebles approaches, Scottish Borders Council (SBC) has agreed to review the facilities offered in the building for library and museum provision.
The Chambers Institution, on the High Street in Peebles, has played a key role in the provision of cultural services to Peebles and the surrounding community since it was gifted to the town in 1859. It is currently home to many facilities and services such as the library, museum, Burgh Hall and the beautiful war memorial.
To help develop a plan for improvements to the building, SBC is conducting a survey to gather views from the public about the type and range of services and facilities that should be provided.
Councillor Graham Garvie, Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Community Education, explained why this survey is important for the future of the Institution: “As the 150th anniversary approaches, we are keen to gather views on how the facilities and services can be improved upon within the Chambers Institution to serve the needs of the people in the 21st century. The Chambers Institution is a magnificent suite of buildings which is at the very heart of Peebles and its people. I would therefore like to encourage as many members of the public as possible to complete the survey and have their say in its future. We will be reviewing all the community feedback and incorporate as much as possible into the future plans of the building.”
The questionnaire has already been issued to a wide range of community groups and is available from both Peebles Library and Tweeddale Museum.
Copies of the questionnaire can also be downloaded from http://www.scotborders.gov.uk/libraries, or can be obtained by contacting Ian Brown, Cultural Services Manager, Scottish Borders Council, Newtown St Boswells, Melrose TD6 0SA, telephone 01835 826606 or online
Copies should either be returned to Council Headquarters or to Peebles Library or Museum by Monday 21 January 2008.
