New Borders Pipes CD out in time for Christmas

Friday, December 7 2007

The ideal Christmas gift for Scottish Borders Piping enthusiasts is out now in the shape of a new CD called Borders Pipes. The CD has been developed by Scottish Borders Council’s Arts Development Team as part of their Borders Traditions CD series.

It has been produced and directed by Dr Fred Freeman, a respected authority in the traditional music and song scene in Scotland and producer of the renowned Burns Song CD series.

Building on the success of previous CDs in the collection, this is the fourth in the Borders Traditions series to be produced by Fred Freeman. The others being Borders Fiddles, Borders Sangsters and Borders Boxes. The CD, which will be launched officially at a concert on Friday 14 December at 7:30p.m at the Heart of Hawick, features four pipers who have either originated from or are strongly associated with the Borders; Gordon Mooney, Calum Galleitch, Chris Ormston and Chris Waite. Accompanying the pipers are local musicians Marc Duff, Ian Anderson and Shona Mooney.

Shona, Traditional and World Music Development Worker with Scottish Borders Arts Development Team, said: “The choice of repertoire selected for the CD draws upon the music of 18th century gypsy Border piper Jimmy Allan, Border gathering tunes, Robert Burns’ song melodies and also newly composed pieces by Gordon Mooney, Harris Playfair and Andrew Waite.”

During the launch the audience will hear live performances from each of the pipers and their accompanists, excerpts from the recording and a short talk will be given by Dr Fred Freeman who produced and directed the CD.

Tickets are priced at £10 and £8 (concessions) and are available from the Arts Development Team on 01750 724901 (9 a.m. – 4 p.m, Monday – Friday); on-line at www.thebooth.co.uk and at “Evelyn in Solutions” High Street, Hawick.  Tickets will also be on sale at the box office on the night, although subject to availability.

The CD is priced at £9.99 and is available from Arts Development at Library HQ, St Mary’s Mill, Selkirk. Tel: 01750 724901 or email artservice@scotborders.gov.uk
