Scottish Borders is winning the war on litter
Thursday, December 6 2007
Scottish Borders Council has been commended for the work it does to keep the region clean.
More than 14,000 sites in Scotland were surveyed for cleanliness by Keep Scotland Beautiful. The Scottish Borders national cleanliness index score was 72 - one point higher than the national average and an increase of two points on the previous year.
Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, John Summers, said: “We commend Scottish Borders Council for the work it does to keep its area clean.
“The surveys show that 78 per cent of litter found on the streets is from pedestrians. If we all take responsibility for our own actions we can make a difference and improve the cleanliness of our own areas.”
Councillor Len Wyse, the Council’s Executive Member for Environmental Services, said: “This is a feather in the cap for the Council and we intend to continue this trend of surpassing the target index score next year.”
