A pupil at Glendinning Primary School in Galashiels, Eilidh Hunter, is the winner of a competition to design a poster for the 2008 Chinese New Year Dragon Festival.
Children in all the primary schools in the Scottish Borders were asked to design the poster for the event, which takes place in Galashiels on 2 February.
Callum McGuire of Balmoral Primary School in Galashiels and Kaitlin Borthwick of Drumlanrig, St Cuthberts in Hawick were second and third in the competition.
The judges - Councillor John Mitchell; festival organiser Stephen Kwan; Chairman of Galashiels Chamber of Trades, David Houston; and Scottish Borders Council Event Fieldworker, Kate Pearson - were delighted with the standard of the entries.
“Hundreds of designs were sent in and they were all of an exceptionally high standard, with much hard work and effort by the children,” said Stephen Kwan.
“We were particularly impressed that so many had taken the time to include ancient Chinese symbols and used such vibrant colours.”
Some entries included the Olympic symbols (Beijing hosts the 2008 Olympic Games) and some used the Year of the Rat as the theme.
“All of the entries were very original and it was really difficult to pick a winner,” added Stephen. “Eilidh’s entry is very exciting and we are looking forward to her design representing the Dragon Festival”.
Eilidh’s design will be used for all the publicity for the event, which will include a Chinese dragon dance and many other attractions.
This event is supported by Scottish Borders Council, Galashiels Chamber of Trades, Stephen Porter of Porter’s Porches and Conservatories, and George Higgs, Racial Equality Group.
